Jason Roberts MBE

Jason Roberts announces his retirement

It is with great sadness that I have to announce my retirement from professional football on medical grounds.

I've had an amazing 17 years playing professional football and I'm proud of everything I've achieved and grateful for all that I've experienced. I've played in every division and I have fond memories of my time at each and every club I have represented, and also playing internationally for Grenada.

I am now looking forward to the future and having time to focus on my charity The Jason Roberts Foundation.

I am also excited about continuing my media work and having recently passed my corporate governance exams, I'm looking forward to exploring this area further

I have met many fantastic people during my time as a player and I am grateful to the game for the opportunities it has given me.

I'd also like to thank the fans of all the clubs I have represented for their continued support during my career and especially through my recent rehab.

  • On 26 January 2012, Jason signed for Reading on an 18 month contract.

Jason scored on his debut against Bristol City on 26 January 2012; when David James saved his penalty and Jason bundled the ball over the line from the rebound. His second goal came on the 11 February against Coventry City, where he deflected in a Matthew Connolly header. He scored his 3rd goal in 4 starts against Burnley after looping a Jobi McAnuff cross over keeper Lee Grant to win the game 1-0. On 10 March, Jason got on the score sheet again with a goal from close in to the bottom left corner of the goal, against Leicester in a 3-1 win.

Reading's matchday edition of the Royal revealed that Jason had officially made the best ever start to a Reading career by helping them achieve an 8 game winning run, while also scoring four times and providing five assists. He scored his 6th goal for Reading in an important top of the table clash against Southampton, connecting with Jimmy Kebe's pinpoint cross. Jason was integral as he gained his fourth promotion to the top flight.

Early Years

Jason Roberts was born and bred in Stonebridge, North West London, part of a big Grenadian and French Guyanese family. Growing up, he spent a lot of his childhood traveling between London and Grenada.

Like many talented players, football was not just a hobby; but in his blood. As a budding young athlete he was spurred into a life of football by his uncles, former footballers Cyrille Regis, Dave Regis, Otis Roberts (a former Grenada international) and Junior Roberts.

As a youngster he played for Parkfield F.C in Harrow, and had spells under the Tottenham F.C and Watford F.C youth academies.

International Career

Along side his club career, Jason has had the honour to play for the Grenada national team. His dedication to the country, as a player, has been an important influence for the team. Jason managed to score a penalty kick against the USA during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, before Grenada bowed out to the United States. A brilliant 10-0 win against the US Virgin Islands was kicked off by two golden strikes from Jason, during the 2010 World Cup.

An international career high-point came when Grenada beat Jamaica 2-1 in a friendly on June 2008, in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers. Both teams were level after the full 90 minutes, Jason's winning strike came in extra time and sealed Grenada's second ever win against the Reggae Boyz.
