The impact Jason Roberts has had since joining Reading in January has been crucial – says the man who helped seal the deal.

Thames Sports Investment representative Chris Samuelson hailed the 34-year-old for his immediate impact at Madejski Stadium following his move from Blackburn Rovers.

Roberts has scored three times in his first four appearances under manager Brian McDermott and Samuelson, a business partner of soon-to-be Reading owner Anton Zingarevich, is over the moon with Reading’s new recruit. He said: “I think the addition of Jason Roberts has been crucial.

“He’s a Premier League player and is still very good.

“He distributes the ball well, is a real threat and scored a good goal against Burnley with his weaker foot.”

Roberts scored the winner in front of Zingarevich a week ago today in the 1-0 win over Burnley.

Although Samuelson couldn’t make the game due to business commitments in America, chief executive Nigel Howe was keeping him updated via text messages.

“Anton was delighted with the result and the game,” continued Samuelson.

“I was in the States, but I was kept up to speed by Nigel about what was going on and I recorded it to watch later.”

And Samuelson, a finance expert who lives in Switzerland, has also been impressed with another of Reading’s recruits.

“Matthew Connolly is also playing well at right-back,” he continued.

“He’s more of a centre-back, and all in all it’s worked out pretty well. We also enabled the club to re-sign Jimmy Kebe on a new contract and he has been playing well too.”
